Duraflame® firelogs were created in the late 1960s when California Cedar Products Company (CCPC) discovered a more responsible use for the sawdust by-product it created from milling cedar pencil slats. Traditionally this sawdust was disposed of by burning it or by hauling it to landfills.
As a result of a two-year research and development project aimed at developing a consumer product from the sawdust waste, CCPC engineers determined that soft wood fiber had a very good absorbency and bonded well with petroleum wax. These same engineers discovered they could combine the sawdust with petroleum wax and extrude this mixture, fondly named "pasta" by an Italian engineer, into a log-shaped form.
The new extruded logs were designed for burning in residential fireplaces as an alternative to natural firewood. These fireplace logs ignited easier and burned better than the compressed sawdust logs, commonly known as "presto logs" which existed at the time.
Today, we continue to produce a wide range of firelogs for our sister company, Duraflame, the world market leader in this consumer product category.
